10 Things Your Dog Wishes You Knew (But Can’t Say Out Loud)

Have you ever looked into your dog’s eyes and thought, “What are you really thinking?” Good news – you don’t need a translator. As a dog mom myself (shoutout to Myla and Delilah), I’ve learned that our pups are constantly “speaking”, just not in words.

Here are 10 things your dog would tell you – only if they could talk.

  1. “I’m not mad, I just need something to do.”
    • When your pup chomps on your favorite shoe, it’s not personal—it’s boredom talking. Dogs need mental stimulation just as much as physical exercise, and a lack of it can lead to unwanted chewing. Keep their minds (and teeth) busy with puzzle toys, lick mats, and durable chew toys. Rotating different types of enrichment can keep things interesting, tire them out mentally, and save your shoes in the process.
  2. “Walks are for sniffing, not just exercising.”
    • To you, a walk might just be ticking steps on your Fitbit. To your dog, it’s like scrolling through the neighborhood’s social media feed. Every fire hydrant, lamp post, and patch of grass is a post to read—complete with the latest “news” on who’s been there, who came by, and who’s new in town. Sniffing hydrants? That’s basically Instagram for dogs. Let them explore, sniff, and investigate—it’s mental exercise just as important as physical movement, and it keeps walks exciting for both of you.
  3. “That new shampoo makes me smell weird.”
    • You might adore the calming scent of lavender, but to your dog, it’s basically being dunked in a cloud of perfume they didn’t ask for. Stick with dog-friendly shampoos that are gentle on their skin and coat. Not only will it keep them happy during bath time, but it also reduces itching, scratching, and any “fragrant protest” attempts afterward. A happy pup = a cleaner, calmer, less perfumed home.
  4. “Please don’t forget to brush my teeth.”
    • Dog breath isn’t just “how it is.” Imagine never brushing your teeth—yikes, right? Your pup feels the same way, and bad breath can lead to dental problems down the line. Keep a stash of dental chews, or invest in a dog-friendly toothbrush and toothpaste kit. Not only does it help keep kisses tolerable, but it also protects their teeth and gums, keeping them happy, healthy, and extra smoochable
  5. “I like more routines than I like surprises.”
    • While humans love spontaneity, dogs are true fans of schedules. Predictable feeding times, walks, and bedtime routines help them feel safe and confident in their world. Knowing what’s coming next reduces anxiety, makes training easier, and can even prevent mischief—because a well-fed, well-exercised, well-rested dog is a happy, calm dog. Think of it as giving them the security of their very own daily blueprint.
  6. “Your mood rubs off on me.”
    • Dogs are emotional mirrors. If you’re anxious or stressed, chances are your pup will pick up on it and mirror that tension. Conversely, if you’re calm and relaxed, they’ll soak up that energy too. Your mood subtly guides theirs, whether it’s during a walk, training session, or quiet evening at home. Staying composed not only helps you feel better—it helps your dog feel safe, confident, and happy.
  7. “I hide pain really well.”
    • Dogs are experts at hiding pain or discomfort, so by the time you notice something’s wrong, it could already be serious. Regular vet checkups are essential—even if your pup seems perfectly fine. Preventative care helps catch issues early, keeps them feeling their best, and gives you peace of mind. Think of it as staying ahead of problems before they sneak up on your furry friend.
  8. “That food you snuck me might hurt me.”
    • Chocolate, grapes, onions—and even some “healthy” human snacks—are a definite no-go for dogs. Feeding the wrong food can make them seriously sick, fast. Instead, stock up on safe, dog-friendly treats so you can spoil them freely without worry. That way, you get all the fun of treat time, and your pup stays happy, healthy, and safe.
  9. “I age faster than you think-take more pictures.”
    • One year for us feels like a blink of an eye. Before you know it, the puppy energy, the floppy ears, the silly expressions—they’re all memories. Take more pictures, record the little moments, and savor the everyday chaos. Years may fly by, but the memories—and the photos—last forever.
  10. “You’re my whole world.”
    • Your dog doesn’t care about your job title, the car you drive, or how many followers you have on TikTok. None of that matters to them. What they care about is belly rubs, long looks that say “I trust you,” and simply having you there. To your dog, you aren’t just part of their life—you are their life. And every day with you is their favorite day..

Dogs may not speak human words, but they communicate in ways that touch us deeply. From a wag of the tail to a nuzzle, a happy bark to a quiet sigh, they tell us how they feel—if we take the time to truly listen. Pay attention, and you’ll hear them loud and clear, sharing love, joy, and trust in every gesture.

Now it’s your turn! What do you think your dog would say if they could talk?
